Melissa K. Gammon, Student and Administrative Support Specialist in the department of applied physical sciences, was recently awarded one of two 2022 National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI) Staff Awards. The prestigious honor of “Outstanding NNCI Staff Member” recognizes Melissa’s tremendous commitment to provide excellent service and support to all network users. NNCI is a national resource that provides specialized nanotechnology resources to researchers and supports a network of user facilities, including the UNC-Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL).

Bob Geil, PhD, Technical Director of CHANL, nominated Melissa for the NNCI Staff Award. “From handling purchasing requests and managing lab finances to guiding users through the registration process and processing industry contracts, Melissa handled it all with such professionalism,” he said. “When looking back on how CHANL managed all of its administrative needs prior to her support, it’s hard to believe we had any time to do any science.”

Melissa reveals that the award came as a surprise and true honor. “I am both delighted and humbled to be recognized for just doing my job!” she said. “I’ve enjoyed my position at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I’ve done my best to bring my organizational skills and passion for excellence to CHANL.”

Melissa will be recognized this fall at the NNCI Annual Conference at Cornell University. Congratulations, Melissa!
