ostdoctoral research fellow earns poster award at exclusive Perovskite conference

Md Aslam Uddin, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Applied Physical Sciences, is working to combat climate and environmental changes through sustainable energy sources. His work in perovskite-based solar cell technology has been recognized by the Gordon Research Conference on Unconventional Semiconductors and Their Applications through a poster award that will help him move closer to that goal.

“It is one of the major steps toward fulfilling my research goal at Huang Group at UNC-Chapel Hill and my overall research goal,” says Uddin. “This work will potentially help and extend the frontier of the current research on the perovskite-based solar cell technology from the point of commercialization and practical application via reducing the fabrication cost and time.”

Research presented on Uddin’s poster focuses on the scalable fabrication of p-i-n perovskite solar cells and modules with all the solution processed layers except the metal electrode. All the reported perovskite modules have a combination of different deposition methods for the perovskites and the charge-transport layers, which limits high-throughput module production. A combination of any amine molecules and 4-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-N, N-dimethylbenzenamine (N-DMBI) as a dopant added in phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) allows the electrically conductive PCBM layers to conformally cover the perovskites and achieve high-efficiency perovskite solar cells and modules with all-bladed perovskite and charge-transport layers. Uddin’s work was recently published in Advanced Materials. His article appears in “Hot Topic: Solar Cells” on the journal website.

The Perovskite Gordon Research Conference poster award is a monetary award and related certificate given for the best poster based on quality of the research work. To win the award, Uddin’s poster needed to demonstrate quality, completeness, and scientific finding of the research, as well as show the impact of the work on the advancement in the perovskite area.

“It was great to receive this poster award as the Gordon Research Conference is one of the exceptional and best conferences I have ever attended,” says Uddin. “As one of the first and only conferences devoted to perovskites, the Gordon Research Conference is very unique and different from all other conferences in this field of research.”

The exclusive conference only invites the top 200 scientists and researchers in the perovskite field to attend.
