What are the requirements to earn the APSE minor?

The minor consists of five courses for a total of 15 credit hours. These courses are selected from 3 areas:

Additionally, several pre- and co-requisite courses are required. Please see the APSE curriculum planner to learn more about the courses offered in each of these areas.

Pre- and Co-requisite Courses

  • MATH 231: Calculus of Functions of One Variable I (4 credits)
  • MATH 232: Calculus of Functions of One Variable II (4 credits)
  • CHEM 101/L: General Chemistry I (4 credits)
  • One of the following: PHYS 114, 118 (4 total credits)
  • One of the following: PHYS 115, 119 (4 total credits)
  • And a choice of either:
    • COMP 110: Introduction to Programming (3 credits)
    • COMP 116: Introduction to Scientific Programming (3 credits)

Introduction to Engineering

All students must take both courses:

  • APPL 101: Exploring Engineering
  • APPL 110: Introduction to Design & Making: Developing Your Personal Design Potential

Engineering Fundamentals

Students must take at least one of the following courses:

  • APPL 240: Developing your 6th sense: Designing Sensors and Electrical Circuits to Make Measurements
  • APPL 260: Living in a Material World: Intro to Materials Science and Engineering
  • APPL 285: Fluid Relationships: An Intuition Building Approach to Fluid Mechanics
  • APPL 385:  Flow of Force, Matter and Energy through the Biosphere
  • PHYS 231: Physical Computing
  • ENVR 205: Engineering Tools for Environmental Problem Solving

Engineering Topics

Students take two courses to complete this requirement. These courses may be selected from many departments in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and are captured on the following list. Please note that for the courses offered in the Computer Science and Neuroscience departments, you must be majoring or minoring in those departments to take their courses on our list. The following courses form each of the following departments satisfy this requirement:
