The minor consists of five courses for a total of 15 credit hours. These courses are selected from 3 areas:

Additionally, several pre- and co-requisite courses are required. Please see the APSE curriculum planner to learn more about the courses offered in each of these areas.

Pre- and Co-requisite Courses

  • MATH 231: Calculus of Functions of One Variable I (4 credits)
  • MATH 232: Calculus of Functions of One Variable II (4 credits)
  • MATH 233: Calculus of Functions of Several Variables (4 credits)
  • CHEM 101/L: General Chemistry I (4 credits)
  • CHEM 102/L: General Chemistry II (4 credits)
  • One of the following: PHYS 104, 114, 116, 118 (4 total credits)
  • One of the following: PHYS 105, 115, 117, 119 (4 total credits)
  • And a choice of either:
    • COMP 110: Introduction to Programming (3 credits)
    • COMP 116: Introduction to Scientific Programming (3 credits)

Introduction to Engineering

All students must take both courses:

  • APPL 101: Exploring Engineering
  • APPL 110: Introduction to Design & Making: Developing Your Personal Design Potential

Engineering Fundamentals

Students must take at least one of the following courses:

  • APPL 240: Developing your 6th sense: Designing Sensors and Electrical Circuits to Make Measurements
  • APPL 260: Living in a Material World: Intro to Materials Science and Engineering
  • APPL 285: Fluid Relationships: An Intuition Building Approach to Fluid Mechanics
  • *APPL 350:  Data Science for Applied Science and Engineering
  • *APPL 390-001:  Flow of Force, Matter and Energy through the Biosphere (permanent course number will be APPL385)
  • PHYS 231: Physical Computing
  • ENVR 205: Engineering Tools for Environmental Problem Solving

*These courses do not yet appear in the UNC Course Catalog.  In the meantime, we will issue a waiver so that these courses will fulfill this requirement in the minor.
